Transforming the WPS Agenda from Resolution to Reality
16 March, Monday at 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Church Center for the UN - 777 United Nations Plaza, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10017
The groundbreaking Resolution 1325 adopted by the UN Security Council in 2000, highlights the crucial role and leadership of women in diverse peacebuilding roles, including as uniformed personnel and peacekeepers, politicians, human rights defenders, and civil society leaders, and advocates for women's active participation in rule of law, conflict prevention, mediation, transitional justice and peace processes.
WPS is not solely about the protection of women in conflict zones. It recognizes women as agents of change, architects and maintainers of peace, not merely the beneficiaries of peace. However, despite the progress in diplomatic realms and the transformative actions of local peacebuilding networks and post-conflict coalitions, disappointingly, the full and meaningful participation of women in security, defense and peacebuilding remains inconsistent and inadequate. This event brought together researchers, women serving in security and defense sectors, and civil society representatives, to address contemporary challenges and accelerate the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda (WPS).
Panelists:
- Cemre Ulker, Representative of the JWF to the UN DGC
- Celisa Lehew, US Director, Trustee, SecurityWomen, Head of Police for Chapel Hill, North Carolina
- Pablo Castillo Diaz, WPS Policy Specialist, UN Women
- Maureen McGough, JD, Co-Founder, 30x30 Initiative to Advance Women in Policing Senior Advisor to the Excellence in Policing and Public Safety Program, University of South Carolina School of Law
- Merrite Johnson, Program and Research Manager, NGO Working Group on WPS
- Meg McGurk, Community Safety Planner, Town of Chapel Hill
